The September 11 attacks (often referred to as 9/11) were a
series of coordinated suicide attacks by
al-Qaeda upon the United States on
September 11, 2001. On that morning,
terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda
hijacked four commercial passenger jet
airliners. The hijackers intentionally
crashed two of the airliners into the
Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in
New York City, killing everyone on board
and many others working in the building,
causing both buildings to collapse
within two hours, destroying at least
two nearby buildings and damaging
others. The hijackers crashed a third
airliner into the Pentagon. The fourth
plane crashed into a field near
Shanksville in rural Somerset County,
Pennsylvania, after passengers and
member of the flight crew on the fourth
aircraft attempted to retake control of
their plane, which was heading for
Washington, D.C. There are no known
survivors from any of the flights. Learn

Hispanic Heritage Month is a period to
recognize the contributions of Hispanic
Americans to the United States and to
celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture.
The observation started in 1968 as
Hispanic Heritage Week under President
Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by
President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover
a 30-day period starting on September 15
and ending on October 15. It was enacted
into law on August 17, 1988 on the
approval of Public Law 100-402.
"September 15 was chosen as the starting
point for the celebration because it is
the anniversary of independence of five
Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and
Nicaragua. They all declared
independence in 1821. In addition,
Mexico and Chile celebrate their
independence days on September 16 and
September 18, respectively." |
