The
history of Grandparents Day can be
traced back to the first national
Grandparent's Day in 1978. With the
efforts of Marian McQuade, she has been
recognized nationally by The United
States Senate, in particular Senator
Alphonse D'Amato, and President Carter
as the founder of National Grandparents
Day. McQuade made it her goal to
educate the young in the community to
the important contributions senior
citizens have made, and to the important
contributions they are willing to make
if asked. She also urged
the young to adopt a grandparent, not for 1
day a year, not for material giving, but
for a lifetime of experience and caring
just waiting to be shared with others.
Marian McQuade of Oak Hill, W.V. is
credited with lobbying for a national
observance of Grandparents Day. Five
years later in 1978, Congress passed
legislation proclaiming the first Sunday
after Labor Day as National Grandparents
Day and then-President Jimmy Carter
signed the proclamation. The statute
cites the day's purpose as: "... to
honor grandparents, to give grandparents
an opportunity to show love for their
children's children, and to help
children become aware of strength,
information, and guidance older people
can offer." |

Veterans Issues and the R.J.
The Review-Journal,
in an attempt to burnish its credentials with veterans
organizations by explaining how it provides acceptable
news coverage of veterans issues, may have shown its
lack of understanding and dearth of reporting on
compelling local veterans issues....... |

I've also noted that, in the executive and
legislative branch races, that the candidates are ranked
hierarchically. President, Congress, State Senate, Assembly,
County Commissioners, etc… The judicial branch, however, does
not appear to be organized that way....... |

A Beautiful Night in Denver
8/28/08
I attended the Barack Obama speech in
Denver, and as I looked around at the 84,000 people, I
could see a change in the making. Not any change Barack
Obama may be promising, but more a change in
generations. Win or lose for Barack Obama, after that
night in Denver, America will never be the same.... |
