RECENTLY, VCO MUSIC critic Jerry Marcellino and I saw the production Forever Plaid at the Gold Coast. I have to admit that I never would have thought I would enjoy a show so much, judging by its name alone. I mean, come on
Forever Plaid? But, like I've been before in the pre-judging department, I was "dead" (pun intended) wrong.
Going back to the pun; Forever Plaid is about four wannabe crooners that "come back" after being killed in a car-bus accident in 1964 while on their way to do their first "gig." Through the powers that be, they are allowed to perform "the show that never was
"
Mark Perkins, Douglas Frank, Dale Standish and Kevin McMahon are all veteran 'Plaid performers and incredible.
The slapstick and joke timing were a little off (although a bit they did with 4 toilet plungers was hilarious), but they more than made up for that with their tight harmonies and the ability of any of the four to sing lead. They sang renditions from a variety of over 25 songsfrom an upbeat version of Perfidia to Calypso songs to the Beatle's "She Loves You" and many from the '40s and '50s including some wonderful ballads. They also did a bit in a tribute to their idol, Perry Como.
I believe the most unique aspect of the show was their styling and delivery of each song. We sat the whole time with smiles on our faces and an appreciation in our hearts for the whole production staff of Forever Plaid. They have been performing all over the world since its first show at the Las Vegas Flamingo in 1995.
Our table partners, long-time Vegas residents Art and Pat Adams, agreed with our assessment and stated that "We loved the show, one of the best we've seen, and we've seen a LOT!" and really
you just can't beat it for the price.
