The Nevada Commission on Minority Affairs held its first meeting of the newly appointed body on Tuesday, May 6. At the meeting, the Commission elected its Chairman and Vice-Chairman from the nine members recently appointed by the Legislative Commission. Lonnie L. Feemster of Sparks was elected Chairman. Hui-Lim Ang of Las Vegas was elected Vice Chairman. The other members in attendance at the meeting on May 6 were Elena Brady, Reno; Lucy Flores, North Las Vegas; Danny A. Gonzales, Elko; Victoria Napoles-Laza, Las Vegas; Napoleon A. McCallum, Henderson; Xavier Rivas, Las Vegas; and Phil Swain, Moapa. Also in attendance at the meeting was Leticia Bravo, Ombudsman for Consumer Affairs for Minorities and Executive Secretary for the Commission, acting in an ex-officio capacity.
Under NRS 232.860, the Commission will perform a variety of duties, including:
§ Studying matters affecting the social and economic welfare and well-being of Nevada minorities;
§ Collecting and disseminating information on activities, programs and essential services available to minorities in the State;
§ Studying employment, entrepreneurial and housing opportunities for Nevada minorities;
§ Acting as a liaison to inform and educate Nevada minorities about discriminatory and deceptive trade issues; and
§ Recommending proposed legislation to the Governor.
The next meeting of the Commission is tentatively scheduled for Friday, June 6, 2008.
