Reid Moves To Protect Key Medical Services For Nevadans

Nevada Senator Harry Reid spoke about Medicaid regulations this week. Reid held a conference call with Nevada Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley and Nevada Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie to discuss  the effect these regulations have on Nevada’s budget. If not avoided, these regulations cut funding for Nevada and jeopardize vital services for the neediest Nevadans. The discussion takes place at an important time as the state prepares for a special legislative session the end of this week.

As part of the deal Senate Democrats and Republicans reached on the supplemental spending bill, Reid was able to block six out of seven of the insidious regulations on Medicaid, preserving tens of millions of dollars over the next five years that will help ease the current budget crisis. More importantly, it protects key services for Nevada children, elderly, and people with disabilities who otherwise struggle to afford medical care.

Nevada organization honors Reid’s work to protect kids

Nevada Senator Harry Reid received Save the Children’s 2008 Congressional Champion for Real and Lasting Change Award from the organization’s President and CEO Charlie McCormack. The award acknowledges Reid’s “tireless leadership in making real and lasting change in the lives of children,” mainly in rural Nevada.

“We recognize Reid’s important role in helping focus the nation’s attention on the unique needs of children in emergencies,” MacCormack said. “We commend Reid for his commitment to ensuring that the United States is fully prepared to care for our most vulnerable people in times of disaster.”

“I’m honored that Save the Children presented me with this award,” Reid said. “I am proud of these efforts on behalf of Nevada’s children, including working with Senators Kennedy and Dodd to create the National Commission on Children and Disasters. I will continue to work hard for the safety and health of children in Nevada and across the country.”

Reid was hailed for his support in expanding Save the Children’s afterschool programs in Washoe and Elko counties.
