Reid Helps Secure Money for Expanded HIV Testing

Federal grant funds will help minority communities in Clark County.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid announced a significant grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to increase testing for HIV in minority communities in Clark County.

The CDC will send $300,000 to Nevada for the expansion of HIV testing in these populations in southern Nevada. The grant will be administered by the Goshen Community Development Coalition, with the Nevada Office of Minority Health acting as advisors. Senator Reid sent a letter in support of the application.

“We know many Nevadans struggle to afford the soaring costs of health care, especially in this difficult economic period,” Reid said. “Testing is so important when it comes to the prevention and treatment of HIV. This money will go a long way toward helping those who need assistance the most in diagnosing and then treating this terrible illness.

Putting Nevada Consumers First:

Reid Addressing Record High Gas Prices

Nevada Senator Harry Reid spoke this week about the record-breaking gas prices Nevadans are paying at the pump. Seven years of the Bush Administration’s oil-friendly policies have resulted in one of the greatest shakedowns of American families in our nation’s history. Oil prices have quadrupled and gas prices have more than doubled since President Bush took office. As the Bush administration stands by and watches, Nevada families are feeling the pinch—both at the pump and through a weakened economy.

Senator Reid is committed to putting Nevada consumers first, and to fixing the root causes of high gas prices so these solutions have a real, lasting effect. Under Senator Reid’s leadership, Democrats will require Big Oil to pay its fair share and invest in clean and affordable renewable energy sources, which will create thousands of good paying jobs in Nevada. The Consumer-First Energy Act and the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act of 2008 will also protect consumers from price gougers who rip off Americans and greedy oil traders who manipulate the market, and will stand up to OPEC countries colluding to set high oil prices.
