Governor
Jim Gibbons announced he’s signed an agreement with
the U.S. Department of Labor for Nevada to participate in
the federally funded extension of unemployment benefits
approved by Congress last week as a component of H.R. 2642,
the Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2008.
As
a result of the agreement, Nevada’s Employment Security
Division of the state Department of Employment, Training and
Rehabilitation will notify between 47,000 and 50,000
Nevadans of their potential eligibility for the Emergency
Unemployment Compensation outlined in the act.
“Studies indicate that each dollar paid out in unemployment
insurance benefits creates more than two dollars in economic
activity in the state,” Gibbons said. “So aside from helping
people who are struggling to make ends meet during this
difficult economic downturn, this can provide a substantial
stimulus to Nevada’s economy. I’d like to thank Nevada’s
Congressional delegation for supporting this program.”
Under the Emergency Unemployment Compensation provisions,
additional benefits will be made available to people who
have exhausted all unemployment claims and have no
additional eligibility. The program provides up to half of a
person’s original claim entitlement, so someone claiming
benefits under this program will receive the same dollar
amount he or she received through their regular benefits,
but for half as long, or up to 13 weeks.
People will be able to claim Emergency Unemployment
Compensation benefits during the effective dates of July 6,
2008 through March 31, 2009. The Governor has been working
with DETR and the Employment Security Division to prepare
for these changes, and the computer programming is well
underway to be able to handle these new claims.
Additional information regarding the Emergency Unemployment
Compensation program is available by calling DETR’s
Telephone Claim Center at (775) 684-0350 in northern Nevada,
(702) 486-0350 in southern Nevada and (888) 890-8211 in
rural Nevada. Information is also available online at
nvdetr.org.
All
payment for the additional benefits is funded by the federal
government, as are all administrative costs associated with
processing the claims. |
