A 70-year tradition
Recently, Lawry’s the Prime Rib restaurant celebrated 70 years in business with celebratory banquets at many of their locations. I had the pleasure of dining during their celebration in Las Vegas on July 24, 2008 and it was quite the night. There was a reception, then their signature prime rib dinner with wine, dessert and coffee. Then, on August 15, 2008, I had the honor of being one of the first three guests to enjoy lunch now being offered at Lawry’s The Prime Rib in Las Vegas. It doesn’t get any better than this!

To give a little history on Lawry’s the Prime Rib, Lawrence L. Frank and Walter Van de Kamp co-founded the original Lawry's The Prime Rib on La Cienega Boulevard in Beverly Hills. You might recognize Van de Kamp from their food products which are still be produced and sold today. Even in 1938, Frank understood that people didn’t go out to eat dinner just for a meal but for the experience of dinner being prepared and presented. He realized that the right food and presentation would bring the customers. A true showman, Frank designed the famous silver carts so the beef could be carved at tableside.

Lawry's The Prime Rib is still a family business, with the second and third generations of Franks and Van de Kamps working side by side in the restaurants' operation. Part of their fascinating history is that in 1947, Lawry’s The Prime Rib moved from their original location in Beverly Hills from the east side of La Cienega to the west side of La Cienega. However, the family maintained ownership of the original property and opened another restaurant while leasing the property where Lawry’s The Prime Rib located in 1947. In 1993, after a dispute, Lawry’s The Prime Rib moved back to their original location (on property they owned) to become even bigger and better. Lawry’s The Prime Rib opened in Las Vegas in 1997 at Flamingo and Howard Hughes Parkway for dinner and private events during the day. Now Lawry’s The Prime Rib will be open for lunch.
Lawry’s the Prime Rib will be opened Monday through Friday from 11:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. with their Ale & Sandwich Bar. The Sandwich Bar actually carries the Lawry’s concept from the original restaurant, Tam O’Shanter (also part of the Lawry’s family-owned chain). Traditional prime rib roast beef or tender turkey will be hand-carved to order from a shining silver sandwich cart. You get your choice of bread as well as sides such as salads, creamed spinach, creamed corn, and mashed potatoes. “The lunch menu introduces traditional lunch favorites with a Lawry’s twist including Prime Rib Chili, Cobb Salad with diced prime rib and Caesar salad with prime rib,” Chef Ralph Sanchez, Lawry’s executive chef, said.

As for dinner, the $99 Surf & Turf Dinner for Two Special continues until August 31. The Dinner for Two Menu includes:
• Lawry’s Original Spinning Bowl Salad
• Lawry's Special 8 oz. Cut of Roasted Prime Ribs of Beef and one 4 oz. Lobster Tail, served with Yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes and whipped cream horseradish, as well as choice of creamed corn, creamed spinach or buttered peas or Fresh Salmon and one 4 oz. Lobster Tail with seasonal accompaniments
• C.C. Brown's Hot Fudge Sundae Sampler
• Freshly Brewed Coffee or Tea
The food was incredible, the staff was very excited to be part of this expansion (you could tell from the smiles on their faces) and Lawry’s The Prime Rib is a great place with a traditional menu that has been served for 70 years.
